Poverty Relief

Direct assistance and pathways to stability for low-income individuals and families in the Sierra Nevada.

Overview

Poverty in mountain communities looks different than poverty in cities. In the Sierra Nevada, geographic isolation, limited public transportation, seasonal employment, and a high cost of living create unique barriers for low-income residents. Casa Oso Foundation provides direct, practical assistance while working to connect community members with long-term pathways out of poverty.

What We Provide

Food Security

No one in our community should go hungry:

  • Emergency food boxes – immediate food supplies for families in crisis
  • Referrals to food banks and pantries – connecting residents with ongoing food resources
  • Nutrition education – cooking and meal planning on a limited budget
  • SNAP and CalFresh enrollment assistance – help applying for federal food benefits

Utility & Energy Assistance

Keeping the lights on and homes warm:

  • Utility bill assistance – emergency help preventing shutoffs
  • LIHEAP enrollment – connecting residents with the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
  • Weatherization referrals – reducing energy costs through efficiency improvements
  • Water bill assistance – help with water service for rural households

Essential Needs

Beyond food and utilities, we help with:

  • Transportation assistance – gas cards and ride connections for medical and work appointments
  • School supply kits – backpacks and supplies for children at the start of the school year
  • Hygiene and household supplies – essential items for families in crisis
  • Prescription medication assistance – connections to medication access programs
  • Clothing and household goods – donations and referrals to local thrift resources

Pathways to Stability

Long-term change requires more than emergency assistance:

  • Benefits enrollment – helping residents access all public benefits they qualify for
  • Job training referrals – connections to workforce development programs
  • Financial coaching – budgeting, savings, and building credit
  • Tax preparation assistance – free tax filing and EITC maximization

The Reality of Sierra Nevada Poverty

Poverty rates in many Sierra Nevada foothill counties exceed the state average. Rural poverty is often invisible—spread across vast geographies, hidden from urban view, and underserved by traditional social services.

Seasonal employment in tourism, agriculture, and construction creates income volatility that can tip families into crisis with little warning. A car repair, a medical bill, or a week without work can be enough to destabilize a family living paycheck to paycheck.

Casa Oso Foundation believes that every person in our mountain communities deserves a safety net—and a path forward.
